SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - On Thursday evening, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced that the South End Bridge connecting Agawam and Springfield is closed due to a crash.

MassDOT went on to say that drivers should try to find alternative routes for the time being.

Western Mass News reached out to Massachusetts State Police, who said that around 7 p.m. troopers from the Springfield Barracks responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle. The crash occurred on Route 5 in the southbound direction. The rider of the motorcycle was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation with the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit.
