South Hadley offers tax calculator to explain override ballot question

SOUTH HADLEY, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - It’s make-or-break time for South Hadley’s budget as that town moves closer to its proposition two-and-a-half override. Now, in April, South Hadley will vote on a nine or $11 million budget override that would keep the town operating at its current level.
But what does that mean for you as a homeowner? And more specifically, how much would that increase your property taxes?
Well, the town has made it fairly easy for you. They have an online calculator of sorts, and it’s on the main website for the town, which is southhadley.org.
You’ll come to this page, and you’ll see this black strip at the top, this black bar. Head over to where it says Read On in red and click on that. This takes you to a second page, which will show you the proposition two-and-a-half override information, specifically the binding ballot question 1A and 1B. Scroll past that.
You’re welcome to read it for more info, but if you’re looking at your property values, your real estate taxes, you want to go to this bar here where it says Search Address.
I’m going to put in a random address in South Hadley. Click on it, and that brings you to the assessed value. In this case, this house is assessed at a little over $300,000.
Now you hit Calculate. And this will show you your estimated real estate tax impact for the $11 million override, which is at $1,278.73. And for the $9 million override, that amount is a bit less, $1,045.96. It’s that easy.
Now, South Hadley officials say because of the multimillion-dollar deficit to their budget, if the vote doesn’t pass, sweeping cuts are likely to be made that affect the schools, senior center, and the library.
Now, tonight, the school committee has their budget vote ahead of the town’s election. The town will also be holding a public meeting Saturday, March 28th. Mark your calendar, and it’s there where you as a resident can hear more about the budget, and you can make your comments
