South Hadley Schools losing resource officers following failed override

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The South Hadley Police Department is removing school resource officers following cuts tied to the town’s failed Proposition 2 1/2 override.
Two school resource officers at South Hadley Schools will now be reassigned to patrol duties.
Police say this decision comes down to staffing challenges tied to the town’s approved budget. In a statement, the department highlighted the impact those officers had building relationships with students, mentoring youth, and helping precent situations before they escalate.
However, officials say school safety is still a top priority. Officers will continue to respond to any incidents at schools and remain available to support administrators.
The police department also says it will keep working closely with school leaders and is encouraging anyone with safety concerns to report them.
