SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - South Hadley voters said no twice. Tuesday night, town leaders are deciding whether to ask them again.

The South Hadley Select Board meets Tuesday night to discuss and vote on whether to put another tax override question before voters and whether to use “free cash” to help close the town’s budget gap.

South Hadley is facing a $3 million budget deficit and after voters rejected two override proposals that would have raised property taxes last month, the select board is now weighing what comes next.

Those overrides were aimed at protecting funding for South Hadley schools as well as town services like the public library and the senior center.

Town officials say the budget deficit is being driven by rising health insurance costs along with cuts in state and grant funding.

Voters shot down two questions back on April 14, one for nine million dollars and another for eleven million, leaving the town without an immediate way to close those gaps for the coming years.

Last month, a joint meeting was held to discuss a new, smaller override that could go to voters in a June special election before the end of the fiscal year.

The select board is expected to decide tonight whether to take that next step.

Meanwhile, the Appropriations Committee has recommended using $1.5 million in “free cash” to help fill next year’s budget gap and support the schools.

The board is expected to vote to finalize a warrant on that Tuesday night which would go before a town meeting on May 13.
