SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The Southwick Select Board is discussing the town’s potential installation of traffic camera technology during a meeting Monday.

Southwick police received nearly $30,000 through a federal grant to fund the Motorola cameras for five years though no traffic cameras have been installed yet. Police say cameras would only be used for law enforcement purposes like tracking stolen vehicles or assisting in investigations.

Monday’s hearing will allow residents to voice their concerns and ask questions about the potential usage of the cameras. They won’t be installed until a final policy is approved by the select board.

“I’m hoping that the select board will actually hear the public comments since many of the citizens don’t even realize that this is going on until now,” said Southwick resident Kimberly Lamarsche. “So I’m hoping that they will have a give-and-take tonight even though statutorily they do not have to. They are here to serve us.”

Southwick’s police chief and a sergeant are at Monday’s hearing to answer resident questions and help them learn more about the technology.
