As snow began to accumulate Sunday morning, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation lowered the speed limit on the Massachusetts Turnpike in the Berkshires and Western Massachusetts.

The speed limit was lowered to 40 miles per hour in both eastbound and westbound lanes from the New York State line to mile marker 59 in Ludlow, according to the MassDOT post on social media.

In addition, trucks with tandem trailers and those with special permits were also barred from that section of the turnpike.

In a separate post, MassDOT said it had 1,671 pieces of equipment patrolling, spreading, and plowing. All districts have entered snow and ice operations.

Temperatures Saturday evening and Sunday morning ranged from minus 4 to 3 degrees at Pittsfield Municipal Airport, with the temperature at 3 degrees at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

In North Adams at Harriman & West Airport temperatures ranged from 1 to 7 degrees Saturday and Sunday, with the temperature hovering at about 6 degrees at 12:30 p.m.

Top wind gusts logged Saturday at 24 miles per hour in Pittsfield Saturday evening and 19 miles per hour in North Adams.
