Springfield man held on $1.5M bail in hit-and-run death of motorcyclist

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – One person is dead and another is facing charges after a hit-and-run in Springfield.
Lauren LeBel, spokesperson for the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, said emergency responded to the area of the South End Bridge in Springfield on Thursday night after a car reportedly hit a motorcycle.
The motorcyclist, identified as 39-year-old Miguel Cruz of Springfield, was taken in serious condition to Baystate Medical Center, where he later died.
“According to witnesses, the operator of the car pulled over after the crash, while a passenger of that vehicle exited, got onto the motorcycle, and drove it away, followed by the vehicle,” LeBel explained, adding that the suspect, 25-year-old Johnathan Rivera of Springfield, was arrested on Monday.
Rivera was arraigned in Springfield District Court on Tuesday on charges including motor vehicle homicide and carjacking. He was ordered held on $1.5 million bail and is scheduled to be back in court on June 9.
