SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Springfield Police marked 6 years of officers wearing body cameras on the job.

The department Said all sworn officers and supervisors — nearly 500 people now wear cameras, and they’ve recorded more than 127,000 hours of video so far.

Springfield Police Superintendent Larry Akers said the cameras are helping build trust and cut down on complaints.

While Mayor Domenic Sarno said Springfield was the first large city in Massachusetts to fully roll out body cameras and calls the program a key tool for transparency, public safety, and protecting both officers and residents.
