Springfield Police to honor over 100 officers, residents at award ceremony

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The Springfield Police Department honored more than one hundred officers and civilians for life-saving work and outstanding service. An awards ceremony is being held Thursday night at Duggan Academy in Springfield.
The Springfield Police Department is taking time to recognize more than one hundred officers and civilians, people they say stepped up in high-pressure moments, saved lives, and went above and beyond the call of duty.
In the room tonight, Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers, members of his command staff, and Mayor Domenic Sarno. The department said this year’s awards include 47 commendations and 16 life-saving awards.
It’s not just officers being honored tonight, crime analysts, advocates, and community members are also being recognized. The awards are tied to real incidents, including rescuing people in crisis, responding to a house fire, and work that helped investigators make arrests in serious cases.
Officials said the honorees come from different units and different levels of experience, with the common thread being that they all showed up when it mattered, and that they helped keep people in Springfield safe.
Later tonight on Western Mass News at 10 and 11, we’ll hear from those being honored at the ceremony.
