SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - A Springfield state representative is demanding answers and action on a Boston Road property that’s been sitting empty for seven years.

What used to be a major retail shop has long been left empty and Representative Angelo Puppolo says he’s had enough.

The Sears location at the former Eastfield Mall complex has been vacant since 2018. Puppolo said that Sears was a cornerstone for the community.

He says vandalism and neglect at the site are part of what’s driving his push for action.

In a letter sent to the owners of the lot on Tuesday, Puppolo called for an in-person meeting with the company, Eastern Retail Properties, about ongoing maintenance and the shot and long-term plans for redevelopment.

Another main driving factor is the improvements Boston Road has seen in recent years with developments across the street and the opening of Springfield Crossing just next door.

“Again, I think all of this can be smoothed over with a nice meeting,” Puppolo said. “That’s what I’m looking forward to. If that doesn’t happen, we’re certainly not going anywhere. We are going to stay on this. This is too value of a property, it’s too important of a piece, beautiful of a piece of where it is situated.”

Western Mass News reached out to Eastern Retail Properties and is waiting to hear back.
