SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - State lawmakers are trying to get a bill passed that would allow bars to stay open later during the World Cup and other major events across Massachusetts.

The House-passed version of the bill, which would extend bar closing time from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m., would run from June 8 through July 31.

Supporters of the bill say the temporary change would have a positive impact on communities and local businesses.

The Senate approved an amended version on Monday that would keep the extra hour of alcohol service through July 31, but would extend outdoor drinking districts through Labor Day.

Due to that Senate change, the measure now goes back to the House and even if lawmakers reach a final agreement, cities and towns would still have to opt in locally before any expanded hours could take effect.

Michael Zucco, owner of Sophia’s Bar and Grill in Springfield, says even if the state and Springfield support the delayed last call, he doesn’t think his business will take part, mostly due to safety concerns.

“We want to keep it under control,” he said. “Depending on who’s playing, we’re going to look at it case-by-case but we want to make sure everyone is behaving themselves.”
