LYNNFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Massachusetts is preparing to lay a hero to rest after he was killed in a crash involving a wrong-way driver on Route 1 last week.

Mass. State Police said Trooper Kevin Trainor was driving home around 2 a.m. Wednesday, when a 911 call was made reporting a driver heading southbound in a northbound lane. Other troopers headed to the area and found the wrong-way vehicle at 2:03 a.m. One minute later, Trainor’s cruiser was hit.

Both Trainor and the other driver involved died from their injuries.

Troopers will “stand watch” on Monday during a wake for Trainor, remaining with him from the hour of his death until his funeral on Tuesday.

A ceremonial walk-by past the casket, followed by command staff, Trainor’s recruit training troop and law enforcement across the region will be held as a visible show of unity and support for the family.

Honors with a three-volley salute, a flag presentation to his family and the retiring of his badge will take place during the funeral.

Across the state, law enforcement are using National Police Week to honor the fallen.
