Suspect identified in Hartford homicide after Massachusetts standoff

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WFSB) - Hartford police have identified the suspect in a deadly shooting Wednesday evening who died after a standoff in Massachusetts.

Chad Petitpas, 46, of Uncasville, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after barricading himself in a hotel room near 579 Northampton Street in Holyoke, Mass.

Route 5 was closed from Reservation Road to the Easthampton line due to the ongoing police investigation.

During the investigation, a warrant was approved to charge Petitpas with murder, assault in the first degree, risk of injury, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal use of a firearm and reckless endangerment in the first degree.

Petitpas was determined to be in a hotel room in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

The Hartford Police Major Crimes Division, Massachusetts State Police and Holyoke Police Department responded to the hotel.

The hotel was evacuated, with the exception of the suspect’s room.

Massachusetts State Police established contact with Petitpas in an attempt to negotiate his surrender.

The suspect barricaded himself in the room and refused to exit.

After a several-hour standoff, Petitpas died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Hartford Police Major Crimes and Crime Scene Divisions continue to investigate this incident.
