A look at Tanglewood throughout the years via The Eagle's archives.

Tanglewood as we know it today first began when Mrs. Gorham Brooks, the heir to the Tanglewood estate and her aunt, Ms. Mary Aspinwall Tappan gifted their home and land to the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1936. This was the first year the BSO and their tenured music director, Serge Koussevitzky brought music to the Berkshires before making Tanglewood and its grounds their summer home thereafter.

The year following their inaugural run with the BSO came a particularly rainy season in 1937, which led Tanglewood to erect a permanent structure on the grounds to shield performers and patrons from the elements. The building would go on to be constructed for the next season and was dubbed, "The Shed" during its first year on the grounds, a name that is still widely used today.
