PITTSFIELD — The B, the Berkshires’ lifestyle magazine published by The Berkshire Eagle, has named Larry Carlat its new editor-in-chief and Lauren Mechling as executive editor, bringing two nationally recognized voices in journalism to its editorial leadership team.

Carlat, a writer and editor who lives in Austerlitz, N.Y., will oversee The B’s editorial vision and creative direction. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, GQ, Rolling Stone, Men’s Journal, Men’s Health and SLAM. In addition to his journalism, Carlat is a grief coach and group leader for bereaved parents and the author of “A Space in the Heart,” a memoir exploring loss, love and resilience. His work is widely known for its emotional depth and narrative strength.

Mechling, who resides in Brooklyn and Hillsdale, N.Y., will help shape the magazine’s features, profiles and special coverage. She has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Architectural Digest, The New Yorker and Vogue, where she authored a regular book column. Her story, “The Insider’s Guide to the Berkshires,” published in W magazine in September 2025, struck a chord with readers and went viral throughout the community.

“Larry and Lauren bring extraordinary talent, wit and editorial integrity to The B,” said Michelle Thorpe Petricca, founder and publisher of The B. “They understand both the national media landscape and the unique character of the Berkshires, and their leadership will help us continue to tell meaningful, resonant stories about Berkshire, Columbia and Litchfield counties.”

Founding Editor-in-Chief Amy Conway will step into new roles as editor-in-chief of Westchester Home and executive editor of Westchester Magazine, both owned by Today Media. She will continue to contribute to The B, where her voice and talent have won the hearts of readers over the past three years.

“We are proud of the success and growth The B has achieved,” said Gary Lavariere, publisher of The Berkshire Eagle. “Larry and Lauren are well positioned to help build on that momentum.”

The B will also continue its collaboration with Julie Hammill of Hammill Design, which will remain the magazine’s design studio.

The B is a glossy lifestyle magazine and website chronicling the arts, culture, design, food, travel and community life. Published five times a year, the magazine combines refined design with insightful journalism to engage readers throughout the region and beyond. The B was named one of the “Ten Most Notable” launches of 2023 by Mr. Magazine and earned six awards from the New England Newspaper and Press Association in 2024, recognizing excellence in design, photography, history and community reporting.
