WENDELL, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - A three-alarm structure fire destroyed a historic home on Wickett Pond Road in Wendell on Thursday, according to the Greenfield Fire Department.

Wendell Fire Chief Matt O’Donnell said the homeowner, a man in his 80s, was home at the time of the fire. O’Donnell said the man had stepped away from an attached barn to retrieve a tool from a separate barn and returned to find the structure heavily involved in flames.

“House is pretty much a total loss; homeowners are going to try to salvage some of the beams,” O’Donnell said. “It was the 7th oldest house in the town of Wendell, built in 1785.”

Firefighters from Warwick, Belchertown, and Northfield assisted Wendell crews in battling the blaze. Crews attacked the fire from both the interior and exterior and conducted aerial operations while facing extreme heat conditions.

The cause of the fire has not been released. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is involved in the investigation.

The family has set up a GoFundMe to assist with recovery efforts. Click here to donate.
