U.S. Department of Education opens Title IX investigation into Smith College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The U.S. Department of Education has opened an investigation into Smith College for allowing transgender women to attend the school.
In a release, the department said that “biological men” have “access to women-only spaces, including dormitories, bathrooms, locker rooms, and athletic teams.”
Smith voted to allow transgender women to attend the women’s college eleven years ago.
Title IX exception allowing colleges to enroll all-male or all-female student bodies applies on the basis of biological sex rather than gender identity, according to the release.
“An all-women’s college loses all meaning if it is admitting biological males,” said Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey. “The Trump Administration will continue to uphold the law and fight to restore common sense.”
