More than four years after it was condemned, the Holiday Inn parking garage at 1 West St. in Pittsfield is being demolished to make way for new parking.

Demolition has begun on the parking structure at the Holiday Inn in Pittsfield.

Built in 1970, the more than 50-year-old structure deteriorated over time.

Holiday Inn General Manager Charles Burnick said the project will remove the garage’s wings, refurbish the center section and convert the ends into surface lots, creating a total of 170 parking spaces. Demolition is expected to last about 10 days, and all materials are being recycled, Burnick said.
