Westfield Police apologizes, withdraws invitation to history truck with political ties

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Westfield Police canceled the Freedom 250 Mobile History Truck event, originally scheduled for June 14th through 16th at Westfield State University. Community members have been chatting about the cancelation on social media, and not everyone is happy about it.
Westfield Police said they cancelled the event after concerns were raised that while the program receives partial funding and support from federal agencies, it’s also supported by PragerU, an organization associated with a particular political viewpoint.
Police said their goal was a free, educational, family-friendly community event, and that at no time did they intend to endorse any political ideology. However, they said some people in the community and at the university perceived it differently.
Police stated that because even the appearance of political alignment could damage public trust, they made the decision to cancel and apologize for the inconvenience.
The reaction online has been strong some commenters writing, quote: “just let the country know what kind of police departments Massachusetts have,” and “shame on them,” others said, “disgusting. So disappointed.”
Meanwhile, the Freedom 250 mobile museum said its “Freedom Truck” will be in West Suffield, Conn. this weekend June 5th through June 7th at VFW on Sheldon Street. It’ll be open on Friday from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Western Mass News has reached out to Westfield State University for a statement, including whether the university played a role in the decision to cancel, and we’re waiting to hear back.
