WINDSOR — A 73-year-old Shelburne Falls man died Dec. 26, two days after a head-on crash on Route 9 in Windsor that left him in critical condition.

Henry Whiteside was pronounced dead at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, according to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office.

The crash occurred at about 9 a.m. Dec. 24 in the area of 1404 Berkshire Trail. Whiteside was driving a 2012 Honda Fit westbound when he veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Derek Costa, 44, of West Springfield, who was traveling eastbound.

Medical staff believed Whiteside suffered a "cardiac event" prior to the crash, according to the DA's office.

Costa suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention at the scene.

Whiteside received CPR at the crash site before Dalton emergency services transported him to Berkshire Medical Center. He was then airlifted to Baystate Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition until his death. He died surrounded by his three children, according to his obituary.

Snow was falling at the time of the crash. Route 9 was closed for several hours while Massachusetts State Police investigated.

Whiteside was born in Burgaw, N.C., and attended Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va., and General Theological Seminary in New York City before being ordained an Episcopal priest in 1983.

He served at the Church of the Good Shepherd, and his work there included helping to provide emergency shelter, meals and permanent housing for about 150 people annually.

Whiteside moved to Massachusetts in 2001, where he began an acupuncture practice and was a minister at Plainfield Congregational Church, according to his obituary.

"His friends and family will keenly miss his penetrating mind and caring heart, which were always straining toward justice, truth and the mercy at the heart of his faith," the obituary said.

A funeral service will be held Jan. 3 in Burgaw, N.C., with a memorial service planned for Western Massachusetts in the coming weeks.
