CHESHIRE — Newcomer Scott McWhirt was elected to the Select Board via write-in at the annual town election on Monday.

McWhirt took home the victory for a three-year seat on the Select Board over Mark Biagini, 190-162, according to results provided by Town Clerk Whitney Flynn. Current Select Board member Jason Levesque did not seek reelection.

McWhirt was one of three people elected via write-in on Monday, along with Kathryn LeBlanc for a three-year Board of Health seat and Daniel Barnes for a three-year term as Cheshire representative for the Hoosac Valley Regional School District Committee.

In the closest race, LeBlanc won the Board of Health seat 173-172 over Michael Biagini. In an email to The Eagle on Monday night, Flynn highlighted the one-vote difference, writing, “I can’t stress enough how especially at the local level every vote counts.”

Barnes was elected to the Hoosac Valley Regional School District Committee with 37 votes. The position was previously vacant on the ballot.

Out of the town’s 2,582 registered voters, 375 cast ballots, a turnout of about 15 percent, according to Flynn. She was pleased with the turnout, as last year, 128 people cast ballots, and typically, the town sees a turnout of 3 to 5 percent.

“I certainly appreciate the triple turnout,” Flynn said.

Several incumbents were also reelected, including assessors Barbara Astorino and Frederick Hobart, Cemetery Commissioner Stephen LaFogg and Water Commissioner Colin Haas.

Other newcomers were also elected, including William Moreau for a five-year Planning Board seat and Kyle Malloy as Adams representative for the Hoosac Valley Regional School District Committee.

The annual town meeting will convene June 8 at the Cheshire Community House.
