Wrong way crash on I-91 injures three others, including K9

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Around 4 a.m. in the early morning hours on July 11th, troopers out of the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Springfield responded to several reports of a wrong way driver travelling south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 91 in Chicopee.

A rolling roadblock was conducted in order to protect drivers from the wrong way driver around Exit 9. While troopers were positioning their selves to intercept the driver, the suspect swerved his car and crashed into another cruiser belonging to the Mass. State Police’s K9 unit, smashing into the rear end of the cruiser.

The wrong way driver then hit another driver head on. The State Trooper within the vehicle, as well as their K9 companion and the motorist were all transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The wrong way driver, 28-year-old Jose Santiago of Holyoke was taken into custody and also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Santiago now faces OUI and several other motor vehicle related charges.
