SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Santa and Mrs. Claus made their annual journey, spending the morning having breakfast and giving gifts to the community.

Thousands of toys were handed out to children and families at the YMCA of Greater Springfield on Saturday. Kids not only has a chance to take pictures with Santa, but also the Grinch and a few gingerbread men were on hand. It was a truly festive breakfast that put a smile on everyone faces, both young and old.

“We’re serving 700 kids today. They’re coming to see Santa Claus, of course, it’s the big highlight of the day. Having breakfast, spending some time with some of our community partners. Giving a gift take home and give to their parents, and truly just our opportunity to give back to the community,” said Dexter Johnson, the CEO of YMCA of Greater Springfield.

Johnson also told us the event started 12 years ago with about 40 to 50 kids receiving toys, but thanks to help from the community and donations that number is tenfold, “oh, it’s just so important to be able to give back. i think the community has really embraced it and we’re just glad to be a part of it and to be able to serve not only our kids but the kids who are a part of the community as a whole. It’s the holiday season and everybody loves to be able to give back.”

Breakfast with Santa took place on the upper food court level at Tower Square in Springfield with two seatings, ONE AT 9 a.m. and the other at 11 a.m.

This year the annual Breakfast with Santa served the largest number of children since it began 12 years ago. YMCA wants to thank all of the sponsors and the community for all the donations.
