‘This is going to be hard’: Air Force reverses 135 promotions after grading error on test

(Gray News) - The Air Force is reversing more than 100 promotions after a scoring error on a key advancement exam was discovered.
The Air Force said an outdated scoring key was used for the exam for security forces personnel competing for promotion to technical sergeant.
More than 2,200 exams were rescored. The review found that 135 airmen were wrongly told they had earned promotions, while another 135 who should have been selected were left off the list.
“We owe it to those affected to address it immediately,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force David R. Wolfe. “This is going to be hard for everyone impacted,” Wolfe said.
Lt. Gen. Jefferson O’Donnell said the Air Force always promotes airmen “based on merit, which is established in federal law and policy.”
“We owe it to our airmen to own the mistake and to take the necessary actions to not only make it right today but to prevent future issues,” Wolfe said.
The Air Force said artificial intelligence was not used and the mistake resulted from human error.
No other Air Force career fields were impacted by the error.
