NORTHAMPTON, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – One person is dead after a fire in Northampton.

Emergency crews were called to 29 Fort Hill Terrace around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday for a reported fire. While they were on the way to the scene, they learned that someone may be trapped inside the home.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire and smoke coming from the two-story, single-family home and they noted that they did not hear any smoke detectors sounding. Northampton police officers, who were already on-scene, had tried to get into the home, but were forced back by the fire conditions.

As crews began attacking the fire, entry was made into the home, where they found one person dead at the scene. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the medical examiner’s office. One other person, who was inside the home when the fire broke out, was able to escape safely.

The cause of the fire remains investigation.
