MANSFIELD, CT (WFSB) - Fourteen train cars carrying a liquified natural gas derailed in Mansfield on Thursday morning, state officials said.

It happened in an area near Route 32, Stafford Road, around 9:20 a.m., state police said.

The town said the road is closed between Routes 275 and 44.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said of the 14 cars, at least five of them ended up in the Willimantic River.

DEEP initially reported that evacuations would be likely; however, town officials later said no evacuations were necessary, though they did issue a shelter in place order.

The rail line near the site of the derailment is operated by New England Central, according to CSX Transportation.

Tom Ciuba from New England Central Railroad provided a statement.

Fire crews, along with first responders from UConn, responded with DEEP.

“Residents should avoid Route 32, Stafford Road,” DEEP said in a statement. “Please seek alternative travel routes and avoid this area. It is anticipated this will be a prolonged road closure. More information will be shared as details are available.”

State police also confirmed that no injuries were reported.

UConn said it had no evacuations and no operations were impacted on its Storrs campus.

No other details were released.
