HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Several people are without a place to live after a fire broke out overnight in Holyoke.

Holyoke fire officials said crews responded to 5 Cottage Avenue around midnight for a reported basement fire. When they arrived, heavy smoke was seen coming from the three-story home.

Firefighters worked to knock down the flames, but the fire had already made its way into the walls and up to the third floor. A second alarm was called to bring more manpower to the scene and the fire was under control by 1:30 a.m.

Seven people have been displaced and are being helped by the Red Cross. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
