50 Years Ago

  • Bruce Kelso, Huntington’s young adventurer who is crossing the country on horseback, now has a fourth member in his party. His pet dog “Alf” missed his master so much that the family decided he should join the group in Colorado. Three days ago, the Kelso family put Alf into a crate built special for the trip and headed for Bradley Field and within six hours he was safe in Denver with his master.
  • Police report that five motor vehicles were stolen in Northampton overnight. Four had been recovered by this morning. Four of the five vehicles had had the keys left in them, police said.

  • In one of his first acts as superintendent of Northampton schools, Michael Cosgriff told some 30 teachers gathered in a parking lot below his office this morning that he supports their goal of a fair and speedy contract settlement. Cosgriff, who started work today, said he hopes to see a new contract reached with the 300-member Northampton Teachers Association before the school year begins in September.
  • The Midsummer Parade traveled through the center of Amherst Saturday to kick off the opening of the 10th annual KO Festival of Performance. The KO Festival, which is teamed this year with New World Theater, offers drama and avant-garde performances at Amherst College.

  • Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School Superintendent Jeffrey R. Peterson has resigned after four years to take a new job at William J. Dean Technical High School in Holyoke. Peterson was hired as the Smith Vocational superintendent in 2012, succeeding Arthur Apostolou, who retired.
  • Hampshire County Sheriff Robert J. Garvey is endorsing Sarah la Cour, the executive director of the Amherst Business Improvement District, to become the next state representative for the 3rd Hampshire District. “What I like about Sarah is that she will be able to focus on issues that are close to me,” Garvey said in a telephone interview Wednesday.
