• The Hampshire and Hampden Canal Company have a proposition made them by Thomas Sheldon and Jarvis Hurd, the engineer, to construct the canal and put the same in operation within two years, from the line of the state of Connecticut to the river in Northampton, for $290,000.
• Impediments of Speech — S. Harris will attend to correcting and curing impediments of speech, at Warner’s Coffee-House in Northampton for six or eight days.

• The city treasurer has sent checks totaling nearly $700 to parents of high school children as reimbursement for trolley fares paid out beyond the first zone, since last March, when the reimbursement plan took effect.
• Five pictures from the Forbes Library collection, showing President and Mrs. Coolidge at White Pine camp, their summer vacation place in the Adirondacks, are shown in the window of Bridgman & Lyman’s store on Main Street.

• Massachusetts electric companies have begun an organized battle against nonprofit, state production of electrical power. Proponents of the measure say it will result in lower costs for the consumer and boost the state’s economic growth. Power companies counter the argument by saying the proposal will add a new layer to the state bureaucracy.
• The temporary solution to the dispute over staffing in Northampton’s new personnel department was dealt a blow this week. Dana Owens, who was initially rejected for the post of assistant personnel director and then hired as a personnel consultant through Sept. 10, decided to take a $14,000-a-year post as a personnel specialist for the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
