- Former employees at Jack August’s Original Seafood Restaurant plan to open a new seafood restaurant shortly in Northampton. The restaurant, which will be called The Pier, will take over the wine and beer license and the quarters of the present Godfather’s restaurant at 8 King St.
- The Northampton School Committee will consider a more stringent policy for reappointing athletic coaches. Board member William J. Cuneo has proposed that all coaching jobs be opened to new applicants each year. Opponents of the proposal, including the athletic director and coaches, said that it would create chaos and lack of continuity in coaching.

- Northampton is pressing the state for a grant to determine the safest way to extend a bike path across Damon Road and asking it to consider acquiring property next to the popular Elwell Recreation Area to expand the parking lot.
- Teacher Amy Meltzer of Solomon Schechter Day School of the Pioneer Valley in Florence has been named a winner of the Harold Grinspoon National Award for Excellence in Jewish Education. Meltzer teaches first and second grade at Solomon Schechter, as well as adult education classes.

- Stan Ziomek, an Amherst legend whose influence helped shape much of the town over the last six decades, and a man known as “Mr. Baseball” in many circles, died Wednesday at the age of 92. “It’s hard to imagine Amherst without him,” said former Select Board Chairwoman Stephanie O’Keefe, describing him as the tie that binds many different aspects of the town.
- A planned University of Massachusetts tuition increase for the coming year could see costs rise as much as 8 percent. On June 30, UMass spokesman Robert P. Connolly told the Gazette that tuition would increase for the second year in a row because the state was providing less money than requested but he did not know how great the increase would be.
