200 Years Ago
- The committee appointed by the selectmen of Northampton to make arrangements for the celebration of the approaching anniversary of National Independence, respectfully invites gentlemen of the Reverend Clergy, and all other citizens of the County of Hampshire, to attend. An oration will be delivered by George Bancroft, Esq.
- The dwellinghouse of Mr. Windsor Way in Hatfield was consumed by fire on the 7th inst. Not an article of furniture was saved.
100 Years Ago
- John Coolidge, son of the President, left Northampton today, in company with a secret service man, for Washington, D.C., where he will visit at the White House for a short time. During his short stay in Northampton, Mr. Coolidge visited his grandmother, Mrs. Limyra Goodhue, at the Coolidge home on Massasoit Street.
- The exodus of Smith College girls from Northampton will be at its height Tuesday, the day after graduation. Extra coaches have been placed on trains for some time past, a switcher being operated daily at the local yards for this purpose.
50 Years Ago
- Northampton police last night were seeking a stocky, dark-complexioned white male who for no apparent reason yesterday bound a woman and forced her into a closet in her apartment. The victim, who is in her 20s, told police that she was attacked by a masked man in her apartment in a residential section of the city. The man threatened to kill her, bound her hands, and covered her eyes and ears with tape.
- The Northampton City Council Thursday night agreed to hire Arthur LaCasse Jr. of Williamsburg as part-time dog officer for the city. LaCasse has been working on a temporary basis after a dog officer hired under a federal temporary jobs program was injured off-duty.
