50 Years Ago
- Lorraine LePage Teller, a teacher at the Williston-Northampton School, was honored with a plaque at the biennial meeting of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf in Boston last week. Mrs. Teller was cited for her 25 years of successful integration of deaf students into her classes of hearing students.
- The Williamsburg Rotary Club installed a new president at its meeting last night at the Whale Inn in Goshen. Outgoing president Donald Ouimette of Ashfield passed the symbol of office to new president William Forbes of Chesterfield.

- A bid opening for potential buyers of Northampton’s former fire station on Masonic Street has been delayed a ninth time, until work to remove a small amount of contaminated soil at the site is completed, according to Joe Cook, the city’s chief procurement officer. “We’re going through the process to make sure we get a clean site,” he said, “so we get the best price.”
- The owners of the Downtown Grill at 82 Cottage St. in Easthampton announced Thursday that they would be closing their doors after one year, due to lack of time to devote and further develop the business. The eatery opened as a breakfast and lunch restaurant specializing in American cuisine, such as hamburgers and sandwiches.

- After four years of success in Amherst, Glazed Doughnut Shop is set to open a second location in downtown Northampton. Owners Keren and Nick Rhodes hope to open the second Glazed at the former home of SIP cafe at 8 Crafts Ave. in early to mid-August, where they plan to serve up their doughnuts and other treats.
- Donors have successfully matched a $100,000 gift to the Emily Dickinson Museum, which will allow for the reconstruction of a garden conservatory that existed during the lifetime of the famed poet. The museum announced last week that installation of the conservatory will begin in late summer.
