WESTFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - The owner of an abandoned kayak on Hampton Ponds, which sparked a search mission Sunday, has been identified.

Authorities were alerted to a unoccupied kayak floating at anchor around 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The kayak also reportedly had a fishing pole in it.

A search and rescue operation, which lasted until 3:30 p.m., was launched for a potential missing person. Investigators shared information through social media to try to identify the owner.

Around 11 p.m. Sunday, police received a call from a person who said the kayak belonged to her father and that he was safe.

Now, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the abandoned kayak.
