Adams foster parents’ sentencing delayed for child death case
PITTSFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- The sentencing of an Adams couple convicted in the death of their 10-month-old foster child has been delayed.
Matthew Tucker and Cassandra Barlow-Tucker were scheduled to be sentenced Thursday, but they will now receive their punishment on April 2.
On Monday, a jury found Tucker and Barlow-Tucker guilty of involuntary manslaughter and reckless child endangerment. The baby died six years ago after the foster parents failed to get medical treatment, despite there being clear signs that he needed care, prosecutors said. After an almost week-long trial, the jury returned guilty verdicts on both counts.
The foster parents have four other children, including at least two with special needs. The judge asked for a plan for those children and how they will be cared for.
Inside the courtroom Thursday, the defendants’ attorneys and prosecutors made their case for how the foster parents should be sentenced. Involuntary manslaughter carries up to 20 years in state prison, while reckless child endangerment is up to two and a half years.
The Commonwealth requested five years in state prison on the involuntary manslaughter charge, followed by two-years-probation for reckless child endangerment. The defense attorneys asked only for probation.
