NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- Many parts of western mass got up at least a foot of snow, including the City of Northampton.

Western Mass News has more on the aftermath of the storm for Northampton residents.

Typically, cars line the streets of downtown Northampton but now they’re lined with these mounds of snow.

The city is nearly empty in the early hours of Monday morning, with very few people out in the streets.

We spoke to Rhode Island resident David Hunley, who tells us, “It became really treacherous and I ended up having a couple of small fender bender and a pretty big crash just 2 miles from the exit here.”

Like most folks getting out on the road ahead of the storm, David Hunley expected his normal Sunday commute from Rhode Island to Northampton to go fairly smooth. He expected only a few extra minutes added to his trip, but he was wrong.

“The roads got really bad, there were some crashes along the way, I was able to drive in and park here, but I’ve been here for the night since then,” he continues.

For most people, the snowstorm meant a day off from work or working from home. For Hunley, it’s business as usual, “Mostly work, unfortunately for me I have a lot of plans of getting my car to the shop and getting it fixed.”

As we made our way to downtown Northampton, we ran into a few people getting an early start to shoveling. Northampton resident Migdalia Camacho says, “I saw someone here, I don’t work here, but I was walking down the street enjoying the weather, saw someone shoveling on her own, asked her if she need help, she said yes so I’ve been shoveling since.”

Camacho was happy to wake up to the winter wonderland and help out her neighbors. “It’s gorgeous out, there’s no wind, the snow is not heavy it’s soft like cotton soft so yea I’m truly just enjoying this day, I’m grateful I can help my fellow people,” she tells us.

After we left, the snow decided it wasn’t done yet, and a few more inches were necessary, coating the streets in Northampton and across parts of western mass.
