Agawam launches senior & veteran property tax work-off program

AGAWAM, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- The Town of Agawam will soon be accepting applications for its Senior/Veteran Tax Work-off program.
The program helps veterans and seniors who are 60 years old or older earn credits towards their property tax bills by working at the town’s senior center or veterans’ office.
Western Mass News spoke with Agawam Mayor Christopher Johnson and City Council President Anthony Russo to learn what kind of tasks these seniors do, and how this program benefits the whole town.
“It’s a tremendous benefit because it allows some seniors to earn some money off their tax bill, and also it assists the town by performing tasks that we would not otherwise have the opportunity to get to,” Mayor Johnson explains.
City Councilor Russo continues to add, “One of the things they do, like the Mayor mentioned, is our cemeteries. A lot of Agawam’s veterans are buried there, and they really go back into those cemeteries, clean them up, polish them, restore them beautifully to really honor those who served our great country from Agawam.”
Sign-ups begin on February 23rd. You can pick up an application at the Council on Aging on Main Street. The deadline for submitting an application is March 10th.
A lottery will then be held March 11th, if the demand exceeds the available number of spots.
