ATV rider safe after falling through ice

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – One person is safe after the ATV they were on fell through ice at a Springfield pond.
Springfield Fire Capt. Drew Piemonte said that emergency crews were called to Five Mile Pond just before 8 a.m. Thursday. After the person was able to get themselves out of the way, they were treated at the scene for cold exposure.
Fire officials noted that the minimum ice thickness needed for safe ATV or snowmobile use is six inches. They added that people should use caution and conduct thorough surveys of the ice in multiple areas prior to crossing the ice on foot or by ATV or snowmobile.
