SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- Baystate Health has confirmed layoffs we first told you about last week.

Officials with the health system said it’s $60 million behind budget. They continue to see fewer patients because patients are delaying non-urgent and elective care with disruptions in insurance, economic uncertainty, and inflation.

In a statement, Baystate said, in part, “These challenges are expected to intensify with unprecedented cuts to Medicare and Medicaid from the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ act. Baystate’s payor mix is more than 70% Medicare and Medicaid, so we will be disproportionately hit by work requirements, eligibility guidelines, new co-pays, reductions in care for immigrants and more enrollment red tape.”

They also said they are in the process of a multi-year operational and financial transformation to strengthen their position, but those efforts are not sufficient to ensure our long-term financial sustainability and, therefore, needed to make some cuts across Baystate Health and Health New England to meet current demands and reduce administrative layers.
