Berkshire DA finds lawful use of force in deadly Hinsdale police shooting
HINSDALE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office has found that a police officer used a “lawful use of force” in a deadly officer-involved shooting that also left two officers injured earlier this year.
On January 6, the FBI notified local authorities that 27-year-old Biagio Kauvil made a call that raised mental health concerns. While speaking with him on January 7, police decided to bring him into custody.
A struggle ensued while officers were detaining him and a gun Kauvil was holding went off. One officer was hit in his ballistic vest and another in the elbow. One of those officers then shot Kauvil, who later died in the hospital.
The D.A.’s office said they apologized to Kauvil’s mother ahead of Tuesday’s update after she expressed concerns of her son’s portrayal during previous conferences.
