MONSON, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Charges have been filed in connection with a hit-and-run crash that damaged a Monson landmark.

Monson Police said Tuesday that through “diligent police work” and “investigative techniques,” they were able to identify the vehicle that hit ‘Mac the Dragon’ and located and identify the driver, who is now facing charges of leaving the scene of property damage, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and wanton destruction of property over $1,200.

The multi-ton statue, a large metal sculpture that has stood in front of the Monson House of Art for years and served as a community landmark, was damaged last weekend after a vehicle hit it. “Mac’s special and he represents a good bunch of people here in Monson,” said Reed Cole, a board member for the Monson Arts Council.

Peter Mayberry, who created the sculpture, told Western Mass News that he plans to have Mac brought back to his Ware shop to be repaired by one of his sons. “He’s just very good at repairing things and welding things,” Mayberry explained. “So, I know I can rely on him to bring it back to where it was.”

Mayberry hopes that repairs will be completed and the sculpture will be back in place before the end of the year.
