CHESTERFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Two families are without a home after a fire in Chesterfield.

Chesterfield Fire Chief David Hewes said that emergency crews responded to house fire on Main Road around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday after a nearby resident reported seeing the fire from approximate quarter mile away on the opposite side of the mountain.

Access to the home was reportedly a challenge because of its location at the end of a very steep driveway and mutual aide was called in from several area communities including Cummington, Worthington, Huntington, Westhampton, Plainfield, and Deerfield. The town’s highway department also had to help sand the road and driveway so crews could access the property safely.

The fire was brought under control within approximately 30 minutes and nobody was home at the time. The home has been deemed a total loss and the two displaced families are being assisted by the Red Cross.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Two cats were able to be rescued from the home.

Hewes explained that authorities have preliminarily determined that the fire was caused by the accidental disposal of smoking materials, but the investigation remains ongoing.

Main Road was closed for a time, but has since reopened.
