CHICOPEE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- A new business in Chicopee marked its official grand opening with a community celebration and a donation to local schools on Wednesday.

The Pilot Truck Stop and Travel Center, located near the Massachusetts Turnpike and I-291, opened its doors to customers months ago, but held the official ceremony this week. Staff from Mayor John Vieau’s office attended, as well as aides from other local and state officials. Pilot’s regional manager also attended.

The Patel family from Chicopee Inn, Inc. developed the project. President Dinesh Patel has owned the 89-acre piece of land next to I-90’s on- and off-ramp on Burnett Road since April 2000. Workers broke ground in August of last year for the $ 8 to 12 million project, with construction starting the month before.

Before the ribbon was cut, administrators from Chicopee Public Schools received a $20,000 donation courtesy of the Patel family and Pilot. The money will go toward family and community engagement within the school district.
