CRRC to bring back furloughed workers after released of detained rail cars
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- CRRC Massachusetts said Thursday that more than 100 furloughed workers will soon be able to return to work.
In January, CRRC told Western Mass News that it would furlough those workers for two months, starting on March 16, because of the continued detainment of its railcar shells. The shells were being held at a port due to a notice from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
CRRC Spokesperson Lydia Rivera said in a statement:
“With the release of the shells, CRRC MA’s business operations will gradually resume with the goal to recall affected employees from furlough to resume the work of providing safe quality vehicles to MBTA and Los Angeles METRO.”
“We value our workforce and credit the corporation’s successful delivery of quality vehicles to its partners including the MBTA, LA Metro, local unions 7 & 63, and the Western Mass. community who in 2015 welcomed us to the old Westinghouse site and were thankful for our commitment to job creation and training.”
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey said that it was “great news” that the car shells were being released as they “are essential for delivering the safe and reliable [MBTA] service.” She added that she is thankful for “the strong partnership of Congressman Neal and Interim [Mass. Transportation] Secretary and [MBTA] General Manager Eng throughout this process.”
