SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- The developer of Springfield Crossing is responding to traffic concerns at the city’s newest shopping center.

Springfield Crossing has only been open since November 19 with a handful of stores and more are preparing to open their doors. Since the first business opened, Western Mass News has been receiving complaints about traffic at the intersection at the old Eastfield Mall site. One viewer pleaded for the traffic light to be adjusted and said the BJ’s side of the street and the parking lot across the street shouldn’t get green lights at the same time.

At Tuesday’s grand opening ribbon cutting, Onyx Development Group founder Anton Melchionda addressed the concerns. “The answer is nothing’s perfect, right? And so, with any progress, there’s going to be challenges along the way, so we’ll definitely look at it,” he said. “I think, again, good news, bad news. The good news is no one was here, no one came here to the mall, because it was challenging and there wasn’t a lot of reason to come. Now, there’s great stores, great experiences, great restaurants, and great entertainment, so there’s a lot of people who will be coming here.”

Melchionda said they studied the traffic and put in all the mitigation that they and MassDOT deemed necessary. If there’s an issue with that, they’ll reportedly take a look at it. He added that, as more people get used to the new plaza, the traffic should settle down and he also promised that if they find issues with the traffic lights, they’ll address them.
