Dirt bike crackdown leads to arrest, vehicle seizures in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Continued efforts by Springfield Police to deter riding illegal dirt bikes and off-highway vehicles on city streets has led to more vehicle seizures.
Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said members of the department’s off-highway vehicle detail conducted an operation over two days late last week. On Friday, investigators reportedly saw a dirt bike rider in the area of Girard Avenue. The 34-year-old rider was detained once the bike was stopped and the bike was seized. The rider, whom police said did not have a license, was uninsured, and not wearing a helmet, will be issued a criminal complaint.
The next morning, on Saturday, police pulled over a dirt bike rider, who then got back on the bike and rode through a red light near Bay and Thompson Streets. Surveillance of the rider, identified as 33-year-old Kevin Casiano of Amsterdam, NY, was maintained and he was arrested once he parked on Saab Court. He is facing charges including unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, failure to stop for a red [light], and number plate violation.
Two other motorcycle riders on Saab Court, an adult male and female, will also be issued criminal complaints – and their motorcycles were towed - after police found that they did not reportedly have a license to operate motorcycles. Walsh added that later Saturday, on Queen Street, officers saw a 13-year-old boy riding a quad. The quad was seized and a criminal complaint will be issued for the teen.
