DoorDash releases relief program for drivers amid rising gas prices

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- If you order delivery, or drive for a living, rising gas prices are hitting your wallet right now. AAA Northeast says gas prices keep surging as the war with Iran, now in its fourth week, continues to rattle global oil markets. Western Mass News spoke with a local DoorDash driver who says it now costs him $15 more just to fill up his tank, “Yes, before I had full gas for $30. Now they cost me $40-$45.”
DoorDash is launching a first-of-its-kind gas relief program. For local drivers like Vincenzo Martino, it couldn’t come at a better time. Martino has been dashing full-time for years, telling us it’s how he pays his bills. The company announced Monday it is launching a first-of-its-kind gas relief program, giving drivers 10% cash back on gas.
Dashers who drive at least 125 miles on active deliveries will also receive weekly fuel payments ranging from five to 15 dollars. Eligible drivers could save an estimated $1.40 to $1.90 per gallon through April 26th. Martino goes on to explain, “I have to because that’s the only job I got. Like for now, it’s good. It was good before. Like for now, it’s a little bit hard.”
Western Mass News reached out to DoorDash, who sent us a statement saying, “Rising gas prices are squeezing dashers who rely on their cars to earn and support their families. This program is about putting real money back into dashers’ pockets.”
For Vincenzo, and thousands of drivers like him, the program is a start; but until prices come down, he says he’ll keep doing the math every time he pulls up to the pump.
