Driver in deadly Virginia crash that killed Greenfield family out of hospital, in custody

(WGGB/WSHM) - A driver facing manslaughter charges in connection with a deadly crash on I-95 in Virginia is out of the hospital.
The Doncev family from Greenfield was on their way to a family wedding in South Carolina when, on May 29, a bus failed to slow down for a work zone, which caused a chain-reaction crash. Dmitri, 45, and Ecaterina, 44, were killed and their 14-year-old daughter, Emily, and seven-year-old son, Mark, also died in the crash.
A fifth victim, identified as 25-year-old Priscilla Mafalda of Worcester, was also killed in the crash. Her husband was also in that crash, but he survived.
On Tuesday, Virginia State Police said the bus driver, Jing Dong of Staten Island, NY, is now out of the hospital. He’s currently being held at a jail in Stafford, VA on five counts of involuntary manslaughter and one reckless driving charge. An arraignment date hasn’t been made.
Dong reportedly has a history of motor vehicle offenses - in November 2024 in Virginia and in Maryland this past March. In that case, he’s accused of driving a motorcoach 72 miles-per-hour in a 50 mile-per-hour zone.
