Drought conditions lighten up in time for growing season

WESTERN MASS. (WGGB/WSHM) -- After months of dry ground, there’s a bit of relief for western Mass. The latest drought monitor shows improving conditions across the region, which is good news for farmers. Just in time for the spring growing season.
Drought conditions are improving in western mass. The latest U.S. drought monitor shows the region has been downgraded and has finally come out of the moderate level.
As Western Mass News Meteorologist Liam Murphy explains, “So, there are still a lot of locations in Western Mass that are considered to be abnormally dry, but that’s one out of five. So, we have seen improvement since our drought that we had over the course of the winter and last fall.”
At the start of March, some parts of western Mass. experienced low water levels in streams and wells, leading to possible damage to crops or grasslands. For farmers, it’s always about finding the perfect conditions for their crops to grow. Whether that’s battling a wet season or drought.
Despite avoiding any water restrictions over the period of the drought, farms in the area, like E. Cecchi in Agawam, are already growing in their greenhouses, and always have an eye on the trends of the weather.
Western Mass News spoke with Michael Cecchi, the owner of E. Cecchi Farms, who tells us, “You never know what the season’s going to look like ahead. So, you like to at least start with a good, you know, good water table to begin with.”
At least for Cecchi, he’s hoping for a couple of those rainy April days, “It’s good to get the rain. You know, people don’t like the cold, rainy days of spring, but, you know, we need it, you know? So that’s something you keep track of regularly is how dry it’s been and how much rain you need.”
E Cecchi is gearing up to reopen, and although the weather can be unpredictable, they’re prepared for whatever comes.
