AGAWAM, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- The Agawam City Council has adopted a new ordinance setting rules for e-bike riders as other communities in the region consider similar restrictions.

Officials said the goal of the ordinance is not to stop people from riding e-bikes, but to improve safety and make sure riders understand the rules of the road.

Under the new ordinance, anyone operating an e-bike must wear a helmet. Helmets must be fitted and securely fastened. Also, e-bikes are no longer allowed on sidewalks and riders must stay in roadways or designated bike paths.

Passengers are allowed only if the e-bike is designed with a seat for them. Child seats and trailers are allowed, but everyone must wear a helmet. The ordinance also prohibits reckless riding, speed-modifying alterations, and more than two riders abreast at the same time.

Under the ordinance, an e-bike is defined as a bike with working pedals, a motor under 750 watts, and a top speed under 20 mph. Authorities said violations could result in a $50 fine.

The ordinance follows similar efforts in other western Massachusetts communities, including Westfield, where officials are working to pass similar rules.

The Agawam City Council and Agawam Police were contacted for additional details on enforcement, but they had not yet responded.
