Environmental Police to conduct sobriety checks on waterways this holiday weekend

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - If you’re planning on celebrating America’s birthday this weekend on a boat, Massachusetts Environmental Police will be out in force on the water this Fourth of July weekend cracking down on boating under the influence.
From Friday through Sunday, officers will join the National “Operation Dry Water” campaign with extra patrols and sobriety checks in busy areas.
Alcohol remains the leading known factor in deadly recreational boating accidents. State officials said anyone caught operating a boat with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 or higher can face arrest, fines, and other penalties.
Boat captains are urged to stay sober, wear life jackets, and make sure required boating safety certificates are on board.
